Alison is a PhD student with a passion for language and what people do with it. After graduating from LSU with a BA in Theater and Italian, she spent the next eight years in South Korea, Taiwan, Italy, and New Orleans teaching English. Her experiences with people from other cultures led her to appreciate different ways of thinking and to question the "natural" order of things--especially how that order is formulated and expressed through language. For her research in Linguistic Anthropology, she works with an Afro-Caribbean community and their ancestors in Guatemala, investigating the connection between language, kinship, and ethnic identity.
